be weekend of fun. a family get together to celebrate isaiah's sixth birthday. but harriot roberts knew something wasn't right when she started to get sick. >> started out with a headache. and the headache, it went to -- i was shaking a lot. i felt dizzy. and then i got nausea and started vomiting. >> reporter: and then the kids started complaining of feeling tired and dizzy. >> they started out on the floor, on the sofa, started going to sleep. my husband and i, we stayed up. but i started getting more and more violently ill. and that's when the detector went off. >> reporter: it turns out high levels of carbon monoxide were making them ill, the leak coming from a faulty water heater. harriet, her husband, and seven kids ranging from 18 months to nine years old were rushed to the hospital. >> i felt real light helded and was getting ready to faint, but i couldn't allow myself the faint because i had the kids, because i had to keep going to the ambulance, checking on

them. >> reporter: the family tells us the carbon monoxide detector never went off in their apartment. the only reason they found out something was wrong is when the detector went off in the unit directly above theirs. according to sawyer realty, the company that owns dutch village, someone removed the carbon monoxide detector in the unit where the roberts were staying. sawyer manages dozens of properties in the baltimore area. the company has had a history of carbon monoxide-related problems. last month, repeated co leaks at the cove village apartments in essex led to major changes. we also learned just last month, there was a carbon monoxide incident at another apartment in dutch village. after sunday's scare, sawyer was quick to respond, replacing the old water heater and installing a brand-new stove and carbon monoxide alarm. >> i'm just happy that everything is okay. >> reporter: in northeast baltimore, linda so, abc 2 news. >> and the carbon monoxide leak in howard county sent three people to the hospital. it happened on twin rivers road in columbia shortly before 5:00

this morning. the family ran out of the house as soon as the co detectors sounded and called 911. three people were taken to howard county general for evaluation. everybody is expected to be okay. no word yet on the source of that leak. baltimore county police are investigating a carjacking, authorities say an employee at a chik-fil-a on in white marsh taking a bag of money to the bank shortly before 10:00 this morning. a suspect approached the employees, forced him to drive a short distance, grabbed the bank bag and ran away. the victim returned to chik-fil- a and called police. family of the man police say shot two officers this weekend says he is not a maniac. it started on the 3200 block of lake after and ended with a rapid-fire shoot 80 at the corner of edmond son and widmore avenues in west baltimore. this is shawn sinclair, pictured in a mug shot from a previous conviction, still

recovering from two gunshot wounds and will likely be charged with domestic assault and attempted murder. abc 2 news caught up with the first woman police say sinclair assaulted saturday, and she told us he is not a maniac, but rather is a loving man. both wounded officers are expected to be okay. two teens shot, one killed in east baltimore. and tonight police are still looking for a suspect. it happened around 9:30 last night at the corner of east madison street and north kenwood avenue. two 16-year-olds were standing on a corner when an unknown gunman approached them and opened fire. gerard reed was announced dead at the scene. the second victim was taken to an area hospital where he is expected to be okay. a second maryland boy has died from injuries he suffered in an apartment fire. jai farrell died sunday at a d.c. area hospital. his brother jordan passed away friday night. firefighters rescued the boys friday afternoon after responding to a fire at the

family's first floor apartment in riverdale. >> a lot of people in the neighborhood try to get into the apartment and help the kids. but the fire was too much smoke to help them. >> investigators say the fire was caused by unattended cooking, and was ruled accidental. tonight investigators are trying to determine what caused a deadly fire in a vacant row house in west baltimore. it happened last night on south carey street. crews found two unconscious men on the third floor. one died at shock trauma. the other has severe burns. a firefighter also suffered minor injuries. and tonight we're learning more about the death of steve mcnair. authority says the former nfl star and raven had a blood alcohol level twice the legal limit for driving at the time of his death. the toxicology report also showed a trace amount of marijuana in the body of his girlfriend, sahel kazemi. police say the 20-year-old shot mcnair july 4th in a nashville condo and then shot herself. police believe that mcnair was

likely asleep when he was shot twice in the head and twice in the chest. three cockeysville churches were burglarized over the weekend. and tonight baltimore county police are trying to find out who is responsible. one of the churches hit was epworth united methodist church. someone broke one of the windows and stole a safe and cash. popular grove united methodist was also burglarized that night. police say the suspect or suspects also broke in through a window and stole cash. right now maryland's most powerful radar showing some scattered showers out to the west of us. but that doesn't show the whole picture. let me zoom it on back a tiny bit and show you what we're talking about for this evening. cloudy skies, scattered showers and storms throughout the region. our temperatures will hold in the 70s. but we're expecting some rainfall coming in to the region a little later on this evening. we'll show you where it's coming from in just a couple minutes. senator barbara mikulski is

at mercy medical center tonight. apparently she is going to have to have surgery on her ankle. she broke it in three places while walking down some steps. the injury happened sunday evening when she was leaving church in baltimore. reforming the u.s. healthcare system is a major undertaking, and now the criticism is starting to add up. the obama administration says it will trim costs and even ignore the august deadline it set for congress to act. but former maryland lieutenant governor and republican national committee chairman michael steele says president obama's health care plan is a risky [ inaudible ] >> the president is rushing this experiment through congress so fast, so soon that we haven't had a moment to think if it would work, or worse, to think about the consequences to our nation, our economy, and our families if it doesn't work. the barack obama experiment with america is a risk our country can't afford. >> president obama has said repeatedly he does not want a government-run health care system. his vision creating the option

of government coverage and making private insurance companies more competitive. president obama will hold a prime time presidential news conference wednesday night, hoping to sell his health care overhaul plan. you can watch it live right here on abc 2, starting at 9:00. well, congress makes headway on health care reform, everyone is looking for ways to cut their health care costs right now. some advice from the experts. start by getting screened for free. early detection can save you a lot of money, if not your life in the long run. and if you have recently lost your job or face a deduct than is going to devastate your budget, try letting your doctor know. they may negotiate a price with you. and each hospital has its own rules about negotiating rules. don't assume you always have to pay full price. if you have the cash on hand, laying out money before the procedure could also net you a discount. maryland's highest court says a state board should handle the dispute over laurel

racing's rejected slot machine bid. they want their slot machine bid reinstated even though they di not put the $28 million licensing fee. they ruled today the state board has the jurisdiction and it's too soon for the courts to get involved in the matter. the city of baltimore had hoped to make money off the reduced trash service, it's not going to come from recycling. just a week after launching its one plus one service, limiting residents to one bin of garbage and one recycling, low prices are forcing some recycling centers across the country to dump it into landfills. they send their paper, bottle and cans to waste management in elkridge. >> we have long-term contracts with all our suppliers. and we have moved all our material even to a time when it was hard to move. >> last year, the city made $300,000 from its recyclables, while this year it appears it won't make any money. the city does avoid paying

now abc 2 news at 6. >> celebrating a monumental anniversary. 40 years ago today, nasa astronauts landed where no man had been before. >> that's one small step for man. one giant leap for mankind. >> on july 20th, 1969, millions of americans were transfixed as neil armstrong delivered those words, and images of that first lunar landing were beamed back to earth. armstrong's moon walk with his colleague buzz aldrin was historic. >> we opened the door to the future of exploration by touching down on another object. >> apollo 11 landed the first man on the moon. the astronauts say mars should be the next celestial body marked by human footprints. and the maryland science center is asking visitors to the museum and online to share their memories about the moon landing. they're posting what visitors

powerful powerful doppler radar. >> very humid today. >> mug gift. >> kind of muggy, kind of sticky. that's basically the way this whole week is going to be. the one good saving factor is that our temperatures remaining below normal. so that's good. otherwise it would be a real steam bath. >> more miserable. >> that's right. but we do need the rain and we've got some on the radar that we'll show you in just a second. let's take a look outside right now. your shot overlooking the downtown area. low-hanging clouds with us throughout most of the day. the temperature right now at bwi thurgood marshall 79 degrees. 47% humidity. wind from the east at 10. the pressure falling 30.10. there are the tides tomorrow. sunrise and sunset. low temperature this morning 62 degrees. the high today 82, which did hit our 2-degree guarantee, giving us four days in a row. and that's the reason they call it not just for any other reason that it's been certified as maryland's most accurate forecast. our temperatures across the region 78 in york. 79 in hagerstown.

79 in downtown baltimore. dover at 76. 79 in ocean city. and easton right now 81 degrees. our satellite picture throughout the day. we've hood clouds across the region. scattered showers making their way from the south towards the north. the majority of the rainfall right now is out to the west of the baltimore area. but that doesn't mean that baltimore is going to get by scot-free. several areas of low pressure continue to pass along the eastern seaboard. and that will keep us in the clouds and the scattered showers primarily the afternoon variety as these little areas of low pressure continue to scoot across the eastern seaboard. and up the eastern seaboard. the scattered showers again for tonight. the majority of the heavy activity would be out to the west of us right now. maryland's most powerful radar. across the baltimore area, not seeing any precipitation right now. but a few scattered showers out to the west of us. here is the heaviest activity. and as you can see, it's kind of moving in that direction. this is where the heaviest activity will be right from the carroll-frederick county line southward, and off to the west. but here in the baltimore area, we could see some showers a little bit later on this

evening. we've only had 18 lightning strikes in the past two hours. so it's not real active thunderstorm wise. but some pretty heavy rainfall, which the area does need rain very badly. right now in owings mills 77. 75 in walkersville. some showers right now in gherman town, 75. 77 in hanover. 75 in waldorf, and over on rock hall, right now 79 degrees. here is your forecast for tonight. the heaviest rain staying to the west of the baltimore area for tonight. but again, tomorrow afternoon and evening, scattered showers develop once again. then as you can see on wed, we'll have more scattered showers again, primarily in the afternoon and the evening. your forecast for tonight. cloudy, scattered showers and storms. 64 for the overnight throw. majority of the heavy rain again west of baltimore. but in baltimore, we will see some scattered showers. during the day tomorrow, very similar day. cloudy, but cooler. the storms, the majority of them, arriving between 4:00 and ate income the evening. high tomorrow 77 degrees. the extended outlook 77 tomorrow. 86 on wednesday with partly cloudy skies. more showers back in for thursday and friday.
